Choosing a robotic lawn mower involves more than matching a mower to the total acreage of your property.
The right Husqvarna Automower depends on your actual mowable acreage, terrain, slopes, grass type, desired cutting height, obstacles, tree coverage, property layout and whether the mower will be used on a residential lawn or commercial property.
Automation Hub is an Authorized Husqvarna Dealer specializing in autonomous equipment. We work with robotic mowing, RTK positioning, virtual mapping and autonomous equipment, and this guide is designed to help you understand the current Husqvarna Automower lineup and narrow down which model makes sense for your application.

Quick Answer: Which Husqvarna Automower Should I Buy?
Here's a good place to start:
| Your Property | Husqvarna Automower to Consider |
|---|---|
| Residential lawn up to 0.5 acre | 410 iQ |
| Residential lawn up to 1 acre | 420 iQ |
| Residential lawn up to 2 acres | 440 iQ |
| Residential property with very steep slopes | 435 iQ AWD |
| Steep property using traditional boundary wire | 435X AWD |
| Steep commercial property | 535 AWD EPOS |
| Commercial property requiring higher cut | 550H EPOS |
| Larger commercial property | 560 EPOS |
| Higher-capacity commercial mowing | 580 EPOS |
| Very large commercial grounds | CEORA |
This is only a starting point. Acreage alone should not determine which robotic mower you purchase.
Husqvarna's own buying guide considers lawn size and terrain, and its residential comparison chart differentiates models by acreage, slope capability, cutting height, navigation and AWD.
Step 1: Determine Your Actual Mowable Acreage
One of the biggest mistakes when selecting a robotic mower is using total property acreage instead of mowable acreage.
A two-acre property does not necessarily contain two acres of grass.
Your home, driveway, swimming pool, landscaping, woods, patios, buildings and other non-mowing areas should be excluded.
For example, a homeowner with a 1.4-acre lot may discover that only 0.8 acre actually needs mowing. That can significantly change which Automower makes sense.
When possible, calculate the area that will actually be maintained by the mower before selecting a model.
Husqvarna Residential Automower Comparison
For most residential customers shopping the current lineup, these are the primary models we recommend comparing:
| Model | Lawn Size | Max Slope | Cutting Height | Boundary | AWD |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 410 iQ | 0.5 acre | 27° / ~50% | 1–4 in. | Virtual or physical | No |
| 420 iQ | 1 acre | 27° / ~50% | 1–4 in. | Virtual or physical | No |
| 440 iQ | 2 acres | 27° / ~50% | 1–4 in. | Virtual or physical | No |
| 435 iQ AWD | See note below | 35° / 70% | 1.2–2.8 in. | Virtual or physical | Yes |
| 435X AWD | 0.9 acre | 35° / 70% | 1.2–2.8 in. | Physical wire | Yes |
Husqvarna currently publishes conflicting capacity information for the 435 iQ AWD: its U.S. product/category pages show 1.3 acres, while its residential comparison chart shows 0.9 acre. For that reason, we'd recommend evaluating the specific property's mowable acreage and desired mowing schedule rather than using the higher figure alone.
Husqvarna Automower 410 iQ: Best Starting Point for Smaller Residential Lawns
The Husqvarna Automower 410 iQ is the starting point in Husqvarna's current iQ residential lineup.
Husqvarna rates it for lawns up to approximately 0.5 acre ±20%, with cutting heights from 1 to 4 inches and support for both physical and virtual boundaries.
The 410 iQ makes sense for homeowners who:
- Have approximately half an acre or less of mowable lawn
- Want wire-free mowing
- Don't require AWD for extremely steep terrain
- Want a broad 1–4 inch cutting-height range
- Want app-based control and virtual mapping
Husqvarna Automower 420 iQ: For Lawns Around 1 Acre
For larger residential lawns, the Husqvarna Automower 420 iQ increases the published capacity to approximately 1 acre ±20%.
It retains the major advantages of the iQ platform, including EPOS capability, virtual boundaries and the same 1–4 inch cutting-height range. Husqvarna also lists the model for slopes up to approximately 27°.
The 420 iQ is an especially logical model to consider when the property is too large for the 410 iQ but doesn't require the capacity of the 440 iQ.
Husqvarna Automower 440 iQ: For Residential Lawns Up to 2 Acres
The Husqvarna Automower 440 iQ is the largest-capacity model among the current 410/420/440 iQ residential series.
Husqvarna lists it for lawns up to approximately 2 acres ±20%, with virtual or physical boundaries and a 1–4 inch cutting-height range.
For a residential property approaching 1.5–2 mowable acres, this would generally be one of the first Husqvarna models we'd evaluate.
Husqvarna Automower 435 iQ AWD: For Steep and Challenging Lawns
This is where the decision changes from simply asking “How many acres do I have?” to asking “What does my terrain look like?”
The Husqvarna Automower 435 iQ AWD uses all-wheel drive and can handle slopes up to 70% / 35°, according to Husqvarna. It also supports virtual or physical boundaries.
That makes the 435 iQ AWD particularly interesting for:
- Very steep residential properties
- Uneven or challenging terrain
- Properties where traction is more important than maximum acreage
- Homeowners who want AWD and EPOS virtual-boundary capability
The tradeoff is cutting height: the AWD models operate in approximately the 1.2–2.8 inch range rather than the 1–4 inch range of the 410/420/440 iQ models.
Husqvarna Automower 435X AWD: AWD With a Traditional Boundary Wire
The Husqvarna Automower 435X AWD is another steep-terrain option.
It offers AWD and Husqvarna lists it for slopes up to 70% / 35°, but unlike the newer 435 iQ AWD, the current 435X AWD uses a physical boundary wire rather than EPOS virtual boundaries. Husqvarna lists its lawn capacity at approximately 0.9 acre ±20%.
This can make it an option for customers who prioritize steep-terrain performance but don't need a wire-free installation.
What Is Husqvarna EPOS?
EPOS stands for Exact Positioning Operating System.
Instead of requiring a buried perimeter wire to define every mowing boundary, compatible Automower models can use satellite positioning and virtual boundaries.
That allows mowing areas and stay-out zones to be created digitally and modified without physically moving buried wire. Husqvarna describes EPOS as its satellite-based virtual-boundary technology.
For many customers, this is one of the biggest reasons to consider a newer Automower.
Do I Need a Husqvarna EPOS Reference Station?
Not necessarily.
This is an important change in the newer Husqvarna ecosystem.
For compatible residential Automower installations, Husqvarna now offers EPOS via Husqvarna Cloud in select locations. If the property has Husqvarna Cloud coverage, a local reference station does not have to be installed.
If Cloud coverage isn't available, Husqvarna says the included residential reference station can be used instead.
Husqvarna says the reference station requires an open 135-degree view of the sky. Cloud-based EPOS also requires the appropriate internet/mobile connectivity across the mowing area.
This is why we recommend evaluating the actual property rather than assuming every wire-free installation should be configured the same way.
What About Trees and Heavy Shade?
EPOS depends on satellite positioning, so the physical environment matters.
Homes, dense tree cover and other obstructions can affect the installation. Husqvarna notes that compatible installations can incorporate some physical boundary wire in areas of heavy shade when necessary.
If your property has substantial tree coverage or unusual geometry, send Automation Hub the property information before selecting a system. We can help evaluate the application.
Husqvarna Commercial Automower Comparison
For commercial properties, the decision becomes more application-specific:
| Model | Published Lawn Size | Primary Reason to Consider It |
|---|---|---|
| 535 AWD EPOS | 1 acre | AWD / steep commercial terrain |
| 550H EPOS | 1.25 acres | Higher-cut commercial applications |
| 560 EPOS | 1.5 acres | Larger commercial autonomous mowing |
| 580 EPOS | 2 acres | Higher-capacity commercial mowing |
| CEORA | 6 acres | Large-scale commercial turf |
These are Husqvarna's currently published U.S. lawn-size figures on its commercial lineup page. Actual deployment capacity can depend on mowing schedule, turf conditions, property layout and other operating factors.
Husqvarna Automower 535 AWD EPOS: Commercial Mowing for Steep Terrain
The Husqvarna Automower 535 AWD EPOS brings AWD to commercial turf care.
Husqvarna specifically positions it for challenging commercial terrain and rates it for slopes up to 70% / 35°. It also supports EPOS virtual boundaries and Husqvarna Fleet Services.
For a commercial property with significant slopes, this is a very different machine from simply choosing the highest-capacity mower.
Husqvarna Automower 550H EPOS: When Cutting Height Matters
The Husqvarna Automower 550H EPOS should be considered when the property requires a higher maintained cutting height.
That distinction matters because grass type and desired cut height can eliminate a mower even when its acreage capacity looks perfect on paper.
Husqvarna currently lists the 550H EPOS at approximately 1.25 acres ±20% on its commercial lineup.
Husqvarna Automower 560 EPOS: Larger Commercial Properties
The Husqvarna Automower 560 EPOS is a commercial EPOS platform for larger maintained properties.
Husqvarna currently publishes approximately 1.5 acres ±20% for this model and includes its commercial robotic mowers within the Husqvarna Fleet Services ecosystem for monitoring and control.
Husqvarna Automower 580 EPOS: Higher-Capacity Commercial Autonomous Mowing
The Husqvarna Automower 580 EPOS moves farther up the commercial range, with Husqvarna currently publishing approximately 2 acres ±20%.
This is where we would begin evaluating properties that need greater commercial mowing capacity but don't necessarily require the much larger CEORA platform.
Husqvarna CEORA: Large-Area Autonomous Mowing
At the top of Automation Hub's current Husqvarna commercial offering is CEORA.
Husqvarna currently lists CEORA at approximately 6 acres ±20%, positioning the platform for large-scale professional turf care.
CEORA is not something we'd recommend based on acreage alone. For a system at this scale, Automation Hub can evaluate the site, application and deployment requirements before quoting the appropriate configuration.
Residential vs. Commercial Husqvarna Automower
A homeowner doesn't necessarily need a commercial mower simply because the property is large.
Likewise, a commercial property shouldn't necessarily use a residential mower merely because the grass area falls within its published acreage capacity.
Commercial mowing introduces additional considerations such as:
- Daily operating requirements
- Fleet management
- Multiple work areas
- Commercial turf conditions
- Public interaction
- Maintenance requirements
- Cutting-height requirements
- Site accessibility
- Deployment of multiple mowers
Husqvarna's professional EPOS platform also supports virtual work areas, stay-out zones, transport paths and maintenance points, while Husqvarna Fleet Services provides professional monitoring and management capabilities.
Can Husqvarna Automower Handle Steep Hills?
Yes, but the model matters considerably.
The standard 410 iQ, 420 iQ and 440 iQ models are rated by Husqvarna for slopes up to approximately 27°, while the AWD 435 iQ AWD and 435X AWD can handle slopes up to approximately 35° / 70%.
For commercial terrain, the 535 AWD EPOS also carries Husqvarna's 70% / 35° slope rating.
If you have a steep property, don't choose solely by acreage. Slope may determine the mower before acreage does.
Should I Install a Husqvarna Automower Myself?
Some residential Automower systems are designed to support DIY installation. Husqvarna provides a dedicated iQ installation process covering charging-station placement, EPOS, mapping, work areas and stay-out zones.
But DIY doesn't mean every property is simple.
Professional assistance may make sense when the property has:
- Multiple mowing areas
- Significant slopes
- Heavy tree coverage
- Complex landscaping
- Narrow passages
- Large acreage
- Challenging charging-station placement
- Commercial operating requirements
Automation Hub can help with property evaluation, model selection, installation, mapping, app setup, training, troubleshooting and ongoing support.
Which Husqvarna Automower Is Best for My Property?
Instead of asking only:
“How many acres does this mower handle?”
Ask:
How many mowable acres do I actually have?
How steep is my property?
What cutting height does my grass require?
Do I want virtual or physical boundaries?
Will EPOS work well on my property?
Do I have significant tree coverage or obstructions?
Is this residential or commercial use?
Do I need AWD?
Do I need fleet management?
Those answers usually narrow the choices considerably.
If you're still unsure, that's where an experienced robotic mower dealer can help.
